Marine General James "Mad Dog" Mattis, recently nominated to be the new head of Central Command, has the approval of Insurgent Consciousness. He's our kind of guy, and not just because he said the quote in the title. Mattis understands the value of Human Network Operations and Information Access Superiority in counterinsurgency. Below are some quotes that exemplify his philosophy on COIN:
- “High performing small units are now a national imperative, capable of operating independently at increasingly lower echelons.” In other words, Mattis understands that networks, not hierarchies, are needed to fight insurgency. This is especially true as insurgencies tend to be networks themselves.
- “These wars will be fought among the people… we’re going to have to deal on human levels with human beings and not think that technology or tactics by targetry will solve war.” We aren't against technical intelligence and the role of technology in warfare- Wired's Danger Room and Bruce Schneier are on our blogroll- but given the technological juggernaut that our military has become, sometimes strategists and decision-makers forget that these are only tools, with a specific role: to support the human side of operations.
- "I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I'll kill you all." The subtext here is that Mattis is all for for negotiation, but not from a position of weakness. That, if you remember, is called surrender.
